Strange Pains


✉ My Dear J,

I received your message last week. Sorry that I didn’t call back. I just couldn’t. I gather that you are truly concerned about my health, and for that, I am grateful. Forgive my late reply—though, I avoided writing back because I had no real answer to offer. But before madness consumes me entirely and I forget even gratitude itself, I must at least thank you and hold your hand warmly, if only in words.

Since you asked—about the cancer—there is still no certainty. And, to be honest, I have abandoned further tests. The bleeding continues now and then, but it has long ceased to matter. It is the least of my concerns. Since Sept. 29, a new affliction arrives each week, an ever-expanding collection of symptoms, as if my body is no longer mine but some foreign, collapsing structure. I cannot recall a single night of restful sleep.  Every morning, upon opening my eyes, I whisper, Oh no, not this again. 

Strange pains wander through me, but worst of all is the relentless erosion of my memory—it gnaws at me, reducing my days to a series of disjointed moments. My short-term memory has deteriorated to the point of absurdity. I open the fridge and stand before it, lost, unable to recall what I sought. Distractions obliterate tasks from my mind. The other day, I was giving a talk, and all of a sudden, I forgot what I was saying and which work I was presenting. Shopping without a list is futile. I forget my meetings. I write notes and forget where I placed them. It feels as though I remember nothing at all.

Last night, I was in the train station, waiting. And then, suddenly—just as one wakes in an unfamiliar place, momentarily unaware of where they are—I found myself staring at the tracks, unable to recall my destination. Was I going to work? Returning home? Here, in the underground stations of Copenhagen, where no sky is visible, time dissolves. It took me far too long to piece together whether I was arriving or departing.

The doctors, however, are pleased. They have increased my medication, and my EKG, they tell me, is normal. Yes, let that be the only line worth remembering: EKG is normal.

My fingers are lifeless as if they no longer belong to me. I try to move them, but they refuse, so I must stop writing. Take care.

The Rollercoaster of Emotions


🎢 It’s that time in December when I usually reflect on the past year. 2024 has been such a rollercoaster of emotions for me. I have had sharp, cheerful moments—perhaps the most exhilarating I’ve ever experienced—and also deeply painful ones that dragged me to the abyss of life, leaving me questioning why I’m living.

2024 began with a series of accomplishments: finalizing my doctoral studies, graduating, and finally practicing as a doctor of science—my childhood dream. In my professional life, I’m in a place where I feel genuinely happy. Everything seems fine. So, in terms of achievements, what a year indeed! Those who know me or follow me on social media must look at my life and praise it. Why not? Even I feel a hint of jealousy toward my own Instagram life.

Besides my professional life, I’ve also experienced extraordinary and pleasant feelings—like never before in my life. I’ve had the happiest moments of my life in 2024. Moments that made me realize how enjoyable life can truly be. How colors can make sense, and how I can go to bed with the touches and smells still lingering on my body, as if I had spent a day in paradise. The first six months of 2024 were unbelievable. They embodied everything I had ever wanted from life—at least to the extent that is reasonable for an Iranian.

However, life is no picnic. Like all horror movies or tragedies that begin on a high note with beautiful sceneries, drawing you into a sense of comfort before delivering a sudden shock, my life turned from harmony and peace to chaos and misery. The entire world flipped around me. It turned out that life had staged a feigned retreat, luring happiness deeper into my heart where her troops lay in ambush.

Looking back, 2024 feels like a plane crash. The first six months were about ascending as high as possible, making me feel a happiness I had never known. Celebrating my 30th birthday was a highlight—it made me think the whole “quarter-life crisis” idea was nonsense. Nothing could be better than turning 30, moving to Copenhagen with a better life, and the prospect of building something beautiful together in a marvelous city that celebrates both art and science. In July, life felt like cruising in a Boeing 747-8, miles above the earth, traveling at 1,000 kilometers per hour, with drinks in hand and a Billy Wilder movie on the screen. It was that steady, that beautiful. But in August, the turbulence began. You could feel the uneasiness in the captain’s announcements. And then, the crash.

Most of the good moments this year feel fake now, as though they were meant to lower my guard and deceive me into believing that life could be trusted and happiness could be guaranteed. Life, however, was neither of those things. 2024 is ending with so many broken bones, unhealed wounds, and traumas that only God knows what it will take to mend them. I’m living now in the deepest valley of tears, searching for a rope to pull myself out. So far, I’ve gathered some pieces, but the valley is so deep, and everything around me feels tenuous. Like always, my eyes are fixed on the sky, seeking light.

As for my resolutions for the new year, they’re mostly about healing and writing or perhaps healing through writing. I plan to treat science as a side job, something to keep myself from starving. I’ve been more of an office worker for a while now, doing science only during working hours. Outside of that, my thoughts revolve entirely around writing. I’m determined to make this my focus. And yes, I know this could be the riskiest decision of my life—but I’m ready for it.

📸 چند ساعتی از غروب گذشته بود که تصمیم گرفتم از DTU برگردم خانه. در ایستگاه اتوبوس، مشغول خواندن کتاب جدید مطر بودم که چند دانشجو، با شور و غوغای آن سن و سال‌ها، از راه رسیدند و در مسخره‌ترین و خوش‌حال‌ترین حالت، شروع به عکس گرفتن با هم کردند، آن هم در آن تاریکی و موقعیت. صدای خنده‌شان همه را متوجه حضورشان کرد. پیرزنی که چند دقیقه‌ای طول کشیده بود تا روی نیمکت کنارم بشیند، از جا بلند شد و خمیده خمیده و آرام آرام رفت سمتشان. تا به این فکر بیافتم که رفت تا بهشان گیر بدهد، با لبخند ملیحی گفت اگر عکس دست‌ جمعی می‌خواهید بدهید ازتان بگیرم. دختر آسیای شرقی که پشت سکو بود از بینشان جلو آمد و با لبخند دوربین را به دستش داد. پیرزن، با دستان لرزانش کنون EOS R6 را گرفت و پرسید آیا روی اتوماتیک است و قبل از این‌که جواب را بشنود، چلیک! لبخند بزنید، دوباره! چلیک. دانشجوها خندیدند و وقتی عکس‌ها را دیدند خنده‌شان بلندتر شد. پیرزن هم خندید. من هم. اتوبوس رسید و همگی سوار شدیم. شبم ساخته شد. 

این روزها، هر از گاهی که بخت یاری می‌کند و موفق می‌شوم که سرم را از این دریای گهی که درونش غوطه‌ورم بیرون آورم و نفسی بگیرم، خدا را از صمیم قلب شکر می‌کنم که دیگر در هلسینکی زندگی نمی‌کنم. مردم این‌جا خیلی بیشتر شبیه به آدمیزادند. همان شب، وقتی رسیدم به ایستگاه قطار، دختری که متوجه شده بود خیلی مشغول کتابم، جلو آمد و با لهجه دانمارکی‌اش گفت آقا قطار رسید، از دستش ندهید. سرم را بالا آوردم و به دنبال خالصانه‌ترین تشکر فقط توانستم بگویم Oh thank you! در مسیر، با این‌که قصه مطر ناخواسته از دنیا جدایم می‌کرد، هر از گاهی نگاهم را از کتاب می‌دزدیدم تا دختر را پیدا کنم و دوباره در ذهنم — این بار اما بهتر — ازش تشکر کنم. نه چون به لطفش از قطار جا نمانده بودم. بیشتر برای این‌که او و پیرزن کاری کردند تا دوباره احساس کنم که در بین مردم هستم. سگ بریند به هلسینکی و آدم‌هایش که شبیه به میله‌های فلزی بودند.

در کپنهاگ – ۱

☕️ روز دومی بود که از خانه به قصد کار بیرون آمده بودم. دفتر دانشگاه کپنهاگ کار می‌کردم. به سرم زد بروم کافه‌ای که کرم کاراملش را دفعه قبلی دوست داشتم، قهوه بخورم. سفارشم را که ثبت کردم، نشستم روی تنها صندلی خالی پشت پیشخوان، کنار خانم مسن تپل‌مپل بامزه‌ای. قهوه‌ام که آماده شد، باریستای قد بلند بلوندی آن را روی میز گذاشت. ترکیب رنگ پوست و مو، لباس قهوه‌ای و ساعت مچی‌اش جذبم کرد. همین طور که قهوه‌ام را مزه‌مزه می‌کردم، تقلایی کردم که بفهمم ساعتش از چه برندی است. خیره به دستش بودم که خانم مسن کناری ازم پرسید شیرینی که میخورم خوب است یا نه! خیلی شوکه شدم. این جنس مکالمه در فنلاند وجود نداشت. یا اگر هم داشت لااقل من یکی در پنج سال گذشته ندیده بودم. هول شدم. دست و پایم را گم کردم و گفتم بَ … بله‌. نگاهش مهربانی و بامزگی خاصی داشت. توانستم زود خودم را جمع و جور کنم. «البته قیافه‌ش بهتر از مزه‌شه.» لبخندی زد. بلند شد و با ذوق زیادی سمت پیشخوان رفت. قهوه‌اش را تمدید کرد و برگشت. «به حرفت گوش دادم.» خانم پیر خواستنی گفت و ازم پرسید که آیا برای بازدید آمده‌ام کپنهاگ که گفتم برای کار. «پژوهشگرم، همینجا کار می‌کنم.» گفت او هم این‌جا درس خوانده، البته سال‌ها پیش. «از اینجا خوشت اومده؟» «اوهوم. خیلی! به نظرم بهترین پایتخت نوردیکه.» نیم‌چه قهقه‌ای زد و گفت خوشحالم که این را می‌شنوم. مکالمه ما به طرز شگفت‌انگیزی ادامه پیدا کرد. صحبتمان گل انداخت. چیزهایی گفتیم حتی بهتر از حرف‌هایی که آدم‌ها سر قرار می‌زنند. برایم از کتابی که مشغول خواندنش بود گفت و این که دوست پسرش برای شرکت‌های مشاوره‌ای امریکایی کار می‌کرده و در این کتاب ماریانا مازوکاتو چه طور این شرکت‌ها را نقد می‌کند. از کارم برایش گفتم. تحسینم کرد. خانم مسن، جالب بود و عاشق غذا. درست مثل من. روزم را ساخت.
